Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara has been told he will be out for at least two months following an operation just as he was breaking into the first team squad.

The 18-year-old, who is the son of Brazilian World Cup winner Mazinho, is set to become another of the Blaugrana's homegrown talents and made his debut in la Primera against Real Mallorca in May.

Coach Pep Guardiola knows the majority of the club's youngsters fom his time in charge of the B team, Barca Atletic, and has already had most of the training with the top professionals.

"Surgery was required to repair damage to the player's internal meniscus in his left knee that he suffered during training on Tuesday," the club's official website confirmed.

Thiago is seen as an exciting prospect and a future playmaker in the centre of Barcelona's midfield who has already declared that he will play for Spain despite being spoilt for choice.

Born in Italy, he is eligible to play for the Azzurri or follow in his father's footsteps with A Seleccao, but he has already played for the Spanish Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 teams.

In August he played in the Trofeo Joan Gamper against Manchester City and was expected to feature on the substitutes' bench in the early part of the season as Barca rotate their squad during a heavy fixture list.
