Pep Guardiola has explained that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is likely to return to action for Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek after picking up a knock on international duty.

The Swedish striker remained on the bench for the duration of the game against Valencia on Saturday evening in Mestalla when the team could have done with his services to unlock the home defence.

Rather than try to push him back into action though, Guardiola has stated that he and the club medics preferred to let the player recover for the visit of Rubin Kazan on Tuesday.

"We spoke the doctors and left him out as a precaution. We want to see if we can have him back for Tuesday," he was quoted as saying by the club's official website.

"He felt some pain and we have preferred not to risk him."
