Barcelona captain Carles Puyol reportedly turned down a number of offers from Serie A and the Premier League in order to stay with Pep Guardiola's team.

AS report that Puyol spent weeks pondering over his decision and had long discussions with his friend Demetrio Albertini over whether a transfer to Milan would be the right move.

Albertini spent over a decade with the Rossoneri and ended his career in 2005 after a brief spell with the Blaugrana, and he attempted to persuade Puyol to realise his dream of pulling on the red and black shirt of Milan

Manchester City and Chelsea also came in with lucrative offers for the 31-year-old, who was uncertain of his future at the club with the development of Gerard Pique and the arrival of Dmytro Chygrynskiy.

However, Puyol chose to renew his deal with the European champions, much to the delight of his team-mates. Xavi explained to AS that there was "a round of applause" for Puyol before training after the captain revealed that he had signed a new deal.
